Holland & Knight receives Points of Light Award for Excellence in Corporate Community Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- (Feb., 2001) -- Holland & Knight LLP will be the first law firm recognized by the Points of Light Foundation with its Award for Excellence in Corporate Community Service. Former President George Bush will present the award to Holland & Knight and five other recipients on Friday, February 23rd at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas. In its efforts to encourage volunteerism in the workplace, the Foundation presents this award each year to companies that target social issues through employee volunteer programs.

"We share a common future with those we help along the way and in the end they will respect us not because we are a large law firm, but because we are committed people who care," said Bill McBride, managing partner of the firm. "It’s an honor to be recognized by the Points of Light Foundation for our firm’s commitment and our volunteers’ hard work."

The Foundation will acknowledge Holland & Knight for its efforts to improve the lives of children through its Opening Doors for Children program.

Administered by the Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation, Opening Doors for Children is a firmwide initiative to address the critical needs of children from birth through high school. Each of the firm’s 2,800 employees is encouraged to volunteer one hour per week of company time to tutor or mentor a child.
Since its inception, Holland & Knight members have tutored, mentored, coached and helped approximately 12,000 children in local communities and have distributed more than 25,000 books. Program volunteers work with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Reading is Fundamental (RIF), Healthy Start, United Way, YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, local schools and other community organizations to help children reach their educational and cultural potential.

Founded in 1990, the Points of Light Foundation is devoted to promoting volunteerism and assists employers in developing workplace volunteer programs. Each year, it honors six companies that reflect its Principles of Excellence. These companies treat volunteering like other key business requirements and target their volunteering to address social problems within their communities. The other recipients of this year’s award are Alibris, Boeing, Capital One, Petroleos de Venezuela and the Salt River Project.
